1 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
God’s Word has a lot to say about relationships. The Apostle Paul wrote a lot on this subject because our lives are filled with relationships. In his letter to the Corinthians, he wrote, Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
As we discussed yesterday, the people we associate with will absolutely influence our lives for the good or bad. Paul’s words in the above Passage are far more than a mere suggestion. He said, Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.
To be yoked together is in reference to a team of oxen or work animals. For the animals to work together, they are harnessed side by side. Around the neck of each animal is placed a yoke. The yokes are tied together, forcing them to move and work together as a team.
Paul’s instructions are for believers NOT be in close relationships or partnerships with unbelievers. While Christians are to go out into the world and share the Gospel of Christ, we are not to enter into close relationships or partnerships with any unbeliever.
We all know that relationships grow over time. An acquaintance can become a friend and go on to be a good friend who can then become a very good friend. A very good friend can become a roommate, business partner, or even a spouse.
At that point, the two are yoked together. They are operating as a team, and one has tremendous influence on the other. Anytime we allow ourselves to be yoked together with an unbeliever, we are headed for trouble. God does not want us to live a life of trouble. That is why His Word says, Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
God wants the best for all of us. He has given us His Word to live by. When we seek Him first and heed His Word in our lives, we will be blessed.
Only God can..........turn the tide
Seeking Him first, Doreen
