Symbolism

Exodus 17:11-12 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

The symbolism throughout the Bible is amazing. The entire Book (Old and New Testaments) is the story of Jesus and God’s Plan for mankind. As we have studied the first verses of the 17th Chapter of Exodus, we saw Christ symbolized as the Rock and the Holy Spirit symbolized as the Water.

In the eighth verse, we see what happened when the Holy Spirit was released on the people; they immediately came under attack by Amalek. As we read on, we find more symbolism that relates to our individual lives, the condition of the Church, and the state of our nation today.

Amalek is a symbol of the flesh, the old self, and legalism. Whenever the Holy Spirit is let loose to operate, the flesh and legalism will rise up in opposition. We see this in our personal lives, in the Church, and we are seeing it in America today. The Church has prayed across this nation for the Power of God (Holy Spirit) to prevail, and just look at the war we now find ourselves in.

As we read on in the 17th Chapter of Exodus, we find more symbolism. When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, but as soon as he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But his hands and arms became heavy, and he got tired of standing there. They found a stone (a Rock) for Moses to sit on, and Aaron and Hur supported his hands; one on either side, and they stayed the course until sundown.

Under his own power, Moses became weak and tired, and he found comfort and strength in the Rock (Christ) that his friends found for him. When we try to fight the enemy ourselves, we will eventually become tired and weary. We must learn to lean on the Rock (Christ) and trust Him to support us. When we attach ourselves to the Rock (Christ), we find Victory!

The name Aaron means "high and exalted" and, like the Rock, is also symbolic of Christ.  The name Hur means "light" and symbolizes the Holy Spirit.

When Moses became too tired to hold up his hands, the first thing he did was find rest in the Rock (Christ). He literally sat down on the Rock. Then he humbled himself and allowed Aaron (Christ) and Hur (the Holy Spirit) to become his strength and hold his hands up for him.  In this position, they were able to stay the course until sundown.

We must learn to lean on the Rock and allow Christ and the Holy Spirit to do our fighting for us. Under our own power, we will become weak and weary. On our own, we will fail, but with Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Victory is ours!

Only God can……..turn the tide
